Flower carpet in Prague
Prague's Town Hall Tower will offer the most beautiful view of Prague's Old Town Square from 3 -5 September 2010. Local people and foreign visitors will enjoy the magical view of a floral carpet of 500 m2, which will be set up in front of people of Belgian colorful begonia flowers. The opening on September 3 at 6 pm will be accompanied by the performance of several prestigious international music bands and Marathon in Prague.
Well-chilled begonias will be harvested on September 2 and transported to Prague by truck overnight. The floral carpet will have a design with Art Nouveau elements and a logo of Prague and logo of Belgian EU presidency. Within a short time, will 30 gardener-volunteers have to process about 150,000 begonia flowers grown in Belgium since 1860, near Ghent. Up to 300 flowers is needed for 1 square meter.
150,000 flowers that will be manually collected and placed on the carpet. The original carpet, measuring 200 m2 is being set up every other year since 1971 at the Brussels' Grand Place Square and it is a work of the Belgian architect Marc Schauteet.
Belgium flower exposition was installed only in Warsaw and Israel so far. After Prague, the carpet will be shown at EXPO exhibition in Shanghai, China.
